Background

The Ropsten testnet has been selected for the proof-of-stake transition, known as The Merge. To ensure a smooth transition, a Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) of 50000000000000000 has been set, and stakers and node operators must manually update this value in their execution and consensus layer clients before June 7, 2022. Due to the volatility of hash rates on proof-of-work testnets, the exact timing of The Merge on Ropsten is uncertain, but it is expected to occur around June 8-9, 2022. Syncing of an execution layer client on Ropsten may take several hours to days and is necessary for a successful transition through The Merge.

Ropsten Merge Client Versions

To override the Terminal Total Difficulty, node operators and stakers must use the following client versions or newer ones. Both the consensus and execution layer clients should be fully synced before The Merge, which may take several hours to days for execution layer clients to complete.

Terminal Total Difficulty Override

To activate The Merge at the designated time, node operators and stakers should override the Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) value to 50000000000000000 in both their execution and consensus layer clients. The following instructions explain how to do this for each client:

Execution Layer

For the Besu client, add the following line to the TOML configuration files or use the CLI flag: –override-genesis-config=”terminalTotalDifficulty=50000000000000000″.

For Erigon, use the CLI flag: –override.terminaltotaldifficulty=50000000000000000.

For Go-Ethereum (geth), use the CLI flag: –override.terminaltotaldifficulty 50000000000000000.

For Nethermind, use the CLI flag: –Merge.TerminalTotalDifficulty 50000000000000000 or update the client’s configuration file or environment variables.

Consensus Layer

For Lighthouse, use the CLI flag: –terminal-total-difficulty-override=50000000000000000.

For Lodestar, use the CLI flag: –terminal-total-difficulty-override 50000000000000000.

For Nimbus, use the CLI flag: –terminal-total-difficulty-override=50000000000000000.

For Prysm, use the CLI flag: –terminal-total-difficulty-override 50000000000000000 or update the config.yaml file.

For Teku, use the CLI flag: –Xnetwork-total-terminal-difficulty-override=50000000000000000.

FAQ

As a node operator or staker, what should I do?

To prepare for The Merge on Ropsten, node operators and stakers should update their execution and consensus layer clients to the specified versions. Then, they must manually override the Ropsten Terminal Total Difficulty (TTD) value in both their execution and consensus layer clients using the provided commands. It is important to ensure that both clients are fully synced before The Merge, with execution layer clients requiring several days to complete syncing.

As an application or tooling developer, what should I do?

For developers, this is a crucial time to test and verify that their products function correctly during the proof-of-stake transition and in a post-merge context. It is recommended to thoroughly test front-end code, tooling, deployment pipelines, and other off-chain components. Developers should also report any issues with tools or dependencies to the relevant project maintainers. Running through a complete testing and deployment cycle on Ropsten or Kiln is strongly advised.

As an Ethereum user or Ether holder, is there anything I need to do?

No action is required for Ethereum users or Ether holders. The mainnet is not affected by the Ropsten testnet transition. Any updates regarding the mainnet transition will be communicated through this blog.

As a miner, is there anything I need to do?

No. Once The Merge occurs, mining will no longer be possible on the Ethereum network.

When will The Merge happen?

The date for the Ethereum mainnet proof-of-stake transition has not been determined yet. Updates will be provided on this blog. Any claims suggesting otherwise are likely scams. Safety should always be prioritized.

Assuming no issues are found on Ropsten, The Merge will progress to other testnets before transitioning the mainnet. Once Goerli and Sepolia successfully complete the transition, a slot height will be chosen for the Bellatrix upgrade on the Beacon Chain, and a terminal total difficulty value will be set for the mainnet transition. Releases enabling The Merge on the mainnet will be announced on this blog and other community publications. The exact date for The Merge will be determined after all necessary steps are completed.

In summary, The Merge is coming soon!
