The Sandbox, a virtual real estate platform, plans to migrate to Polygon, a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum, in order to better serve its growing audience. This move comes as more applications and users are turning to Polygon as an alternative to Ethereum due to its high fees and slow processing.
To minimize transaction fees and network congestion, the Ethereum-based Metaverse play-to-earn (P2E) game is also moving to Polygon.
In an interview, The Sandbox co-founder and COO Sebastien Borget stated, “The metaverse needs to be built by the people.” He believes that once users start building experiences with their tools and are able to publish those experiences on their LANDs using layer-2, it will be an ideal time to begin.
Once the game transitions to Polygon, it will be able to reach a wider audience.
Polygon’s native token, MATIC, has been one of the best performers in 2021, with returns of 14,000%.
Additionally, there are plans to launch a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) in 2022, allowing LAND owners to vote on game changes. LAND NFTs will also be released throughout the year.
The Sandbox game was developed by Pixowl in 2012 and acquired by Animoca Brands in 2018. In this virtual world, players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experiences using NFTs and the SAND utility token.
Similar to MATIC, the cryptocurrency SAND has seen significant gains this year, with a 15,700% increase in value.
The Sandbox virtual world consists of LAND, digital pieces of real estate that can be purchased and further developed by players.
Celebrities and brands, including Snoop Dogg, Adidas, Atari, and The Walking Dead, have acquired LAND in The Sandbox, creating network effects that attract others to join.
The team is also working on allowing LAND-owning creators to build and share interactive experiences.
After years of development, The Sandbox recently opened its Alpha test period, allowing players to participate in its metaverse. The alpha test received positive feedback, with tens of thousands of players and over 17,000 unique LAND owners.
The Sandbox plans to launch similar playtesting periods every few months in the coming year.
