Over the last few months, we’ve been working with the team at ether.cards to bring an NFT-based on-chain ticketing solution to the Ethereum community for Devcon5.
This experiment will consist of two parts: a raffle and an auction. Proceeds from both events will be donated to the Devcon Scholars Program. We have allocated 100 tickets for the raffle and 50 tickets for the auction this year, and plan to expand on-chain ticketing options next year.
The raffle will begin at 5:00pm GMT on August 22. You can find the link to both the raffle and the auction at https://ethercards.devcon.org once the sale is live.
Provably Fair Sale
Raffle: August 22-24
The provably fair sale will work like a raffle: participants can submit a transaction at any time during the two-day sale. At the end of the 48-hour window, the system will reveal the winners who can claim their tickets.
To discourage multiple submissions and increase their chances, 2% of each non-winning transaction will be withheld. This encourages those with more funds to participate in the auction instead. Details on how the proceeds will benefit the Ethereum ecosystem will be provided in a later post.
Non-winning transactions, excluding the 2% “sybil-resistance fee,” will be refunded after the sale ends.
Bidding: Aug. 27-29 (Reveal: Aug. 30 – Sep. 2)
The auction follows the ENS domain registration silent auction model. Bids are submitted anonymously over a 48-hour period and must be revealed once the bidding period ends. This system prevents bidding wars. Unrevealed bids after the reveal period will be forfeited.
This year, we aimed to create a diverse set of systems to increase the resilience of the ticketing process and showcase the power of Ethereum and open-source community projects. These on-chain mechanisms require direct interaction compared to traditional fiat payments and exchanges. We are excited to experiment with these two on-chain mechanisms for diversification.
After these two sales, there will be a final opportunity to obtain tickets through an appeals round. Unredeemed builder, student, and sponsor tickets will be redistributed through an online application process. The quantity of available tickets for appeals is currently unknown and they will only be distributed a month before the conference. So make sure to participate in the raffle or auction if you can!
