Ethereum’s diverse client ecosystem is crucial for the development of the platform. This includes both execution-layer and consensus-layer clients, both of which play vital roles in Ethereum’s future after the merge.
Supporting execution-layer (formerly “Eth1”) clients remains a top priority for the Ethereum Foundation. These client teams have contributed significantly to Ethereum’s growth and will continue to provide essential infrastructure for the network as Ethereum transitions to a Proof of Stake consensus system. Since January 2020, the EF has invested more than $10M in execution-layer client R&D. We will continue to support these teams as they adapt and scale alongside the wider community.
Additionally, we believe it is essential for Ethereum clients to receive funding and support from a broader range of stakeholders in the community, reflecting the ecosystem’s growth and diversification.
Collaborative efforts, particularly those focused on supporting teams and builders maintaining a diverse set of Ethereum clients, are a sustainable and impactful way to benefit Ethereum in the long run.
Today, we are thrilled to announce that Compound Grants, Kraken, Lido, Synthetix, The Graph, and Uniswap Grants are each donating $250K to support Ethereum execution-layer client teams. This project has been in the works for several months and will complement the significant funding provided by the Ethereum Foundation this year. This fundraising initiative will not affect the EF’s ongoing financial support for these teams.
The support of capable and leading entities across industries will strengthen and advance the innovations happening on Ethereum.
This project is an effort to secure Ethereum’s long-term growth, health, and decentralization. The diversity of clients, the strength of the teams, and our confidence in Ethereum’s success are all fundamental elements of this endeavor.
Why begin with this approach?
One of our goals with this initial round is to mitigate risks associated with relying solely on a single team or entity. We aim to maintain high-quality open source products in a diverse, decentralized, and sustainable manner.
We continue to work towards more decentralized funding mechanisms for Ethereum’s public goods, and this is another step towards enabling larger groups of participants to directly support client development and maintenance.
With the goal of client diversity and the network’s success in mind, we are proud to announce the recipients of this round: Besu, Erigon, Geth, Nethermind, and Nimbus.
As a public good, Ethereum benefits from shared responsibility. This applies to client diversity and the ability of the ecosystem to support itself comprehensively.
Ethereum has the potential to revolutionize human, social, and market interactions on a global scale. With groundbreaking applications, innovation, and increasing adoption, the Ethereum community is pushing the boundaries of what is technically and technologically feasible every day. We are excited to take this next step in fostering that growth and invite you to join us in our effort to ensure that Ethereum remains a diverse and sustainable project maintained by many for years to come. 🚀
