Aragon OSx: The Ethereum Equivalent of Unix

Published on

The DAO technology is currently in the early stages of adoption. As we continue to experiment, we are discovering which governance models and best practices will be successful and sustainable in the long run. One of the biggest challenges for DAOs is that the blockchain is an immutable record, making it difficult to adapt and experiment. To address this challenge, many DAOs have relied on running operations off-chain with a trusted group of actors. However, we believe that for DAOs to be truly unstoppable, they must operate on blockchains.

To enable DAOs to run onchain and adapt their governance as they learn and grow, we have developed a new DAO framework called Aragon OSx. This framework is designed to be lean and modular, allowing organizations to easily customize and adapt their governance. By following the Unix philosophy and creating simple, composable building blocks that can be mixed and matched, organizations can find the solutions that work for them and make changes as their organization evolves.

Aragon OSx functions as an operating system for DAOs, similar to how Mac OS operates on Mac computers. An operating system acts as the intermediary between the hardware and software of a computer, managing permissions to allow programs to run. Similarly, Aragon OSx manages permissions for DAOs, granting access to plugins that perform specific functions. This approach enables easier updates and changes, as only the plugins need to be updated rather than the entire operating system.

The Unix philosophy, which emphasizes simplicity, modularity, and flexibility, guided the development of Aragon OSx. By applying this philosophy, we standardized best practices, provided explicit protocols, allowed for reuse of features, and created a system that is easy to understand and reason about.

In Aragon OSx, the DAO core acts as the trusted kernel, holding the DAO’s assets and granting permissions to plugins, which are external programs that solve specific problems. Plugins can be easily added or removed, allowing for rapid iteration and customization. Developers have control over their own plugins and can design them to be upgradeable or non-upgradeable.

Overall, Aragon OSx provides an operating system framework that empowers DAOs to run onchain and adapt their governance. By following the principles of simplicity, modularity, and flexibility, organizations can tailor their DAOs to their specific needs and make changes as necessary.
